Birthday Present from France

And my birthday present arrived today. I love when my letters are sent with cool stamps.

I purchased this lovely set of French commemoratives and semi-postals from Sarl Pecheur de Timbres. Shipment was quick, packaging was solid and thoughtful. And the stamps, well, they are lovely. I received a total of 36 stamps issued between 1953 and 1955. The Scott 2014 catalog value is over $155.00. This set is a perfect example of why I want to extend documenting my collection beyond the Classics and Part 1. Parts 2 and 3 have cool and highly collectible stamps.

Here are the commemoratives and the semi-postals laid out in my stock book. I received full sets of Sports, Industries, and Inventors.

The Semi-Postals included three Red Cross sets, and the first two stamps from the Portraits sets of 1954. The Portraits set is not complete, and I am not complaining as the 2014 catalog value used is $21.00 each the Saint Louis and Bousset

I all ready have the Sports and the Industries sets, however, a few of the newly acquired ones will be replacing the ones that have faults. I'm pleased as punch to have a sound copy of the equestrian:

The issue for the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Military School of Saint-Cyr is lovely.

The issue for the inventor of rayon, Chardonnet, presents a wonderful contrast of warm and cool reds.

The last of the commemoratives is the issue for la Capricieuse's voyage to Canada in 1855.

The issues for Saint Louis is a nice surprise. Louis was King of France from 1226 to 1270 is considered a Golden Age for France. He was crowned at age 12 and it appears this portrait attempts to capture that youth.

Jacques-Benigne Bossuet was the preacher for Louis the XIV and argued for the divine right of kings. He was known as an accomplished orator.

Finally this issue from 1955 depicts the delivery of mail using balloons during the Siege of Paris from 1870 to 1871. Some consider this to be the first "Air Mail" service, and the covers delivered this way are prized. This lovely little issue depicting the scene will do.

Thanks for sticking with me this far. Hope you enjoyed the stamps. Please email if you have comments, questions, or suggestions.
